History

Wollongong Welsh Choir was formally founded in 1993, comprising mainly Australians of Welsh heritage, and inspired by the engineers and miners who came to work around Kiama and Wollongong. At its peak the choir numbered around 40 singers. John Jones was for many years the President and energetic organiser. Highlights have been taking part in the Celtic festival at Glen Innes and singing at the Sydney Opera House with a whole range of Welsh choirs from around the world.

These days, migration and industrial work have declined and numbers have fallen, but we are still enthusiastic and have many loyal members who demonstrate that you don’t have to be either Welsh or a Welsh-speaker!
